And the ELLE Malaysia Style Awards 2016 winners are...
Announcing the very deserving winners of our first ever ELLE Malaysia Style Awards, presented by Pandora
Last night we held our very first ELLE Malaysia Style Awards to honour the designers and personalities who make the Malaysian fashion scene so vibrant and exciting. Our judges Han Chong, Zaihani Zain, Tengku Chanela Jamidah, Pandora Malaysia's Datin Sri Zarida Noordin and our editor-in-chief Kate Guest deliberated long and hard over the winners - aided by your votes, which came in the thousands! Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, and thanks for making our first Style Awards such a great one. See you next year!
Contemporary label of the year: Cassey Gan
After only three years, Cassey Gan’s label is steadily on the rise. Her modern, sporty aesthetic is an instantly recognisable one, full of colourful staples, column silhouettes and asymmetrical hemlines. And the best thing you can say about Cassey is that her designs look like no one else’s, whether she’s inspired by superheroes or Zaha Hadid.
Red carpet designer of the year, and Malaysian designer of the year: Khoon Hooi
Khoon Hooi gowns are a red carpet staple. His work is elegant but fresh, using traditional silhouettes in new and exciting ways. As a veteran of the Malaysian fashion industry, his designs have always been consistently excellent and popular, making him a favourite of celebrities, personalities and women of style.
Breakthrough designer of the year: Moto Guo
Moto Guo's look is unmistakably his; his playful take on androgyny, his love of artisanal techniques and, most of all, his sense of fun. Our breakthrough designer of the year is irreverent, daring and individual - as all boundary-pushers should be.
Classical designer of the year: Rizalman
Rizalman is a veteran of the field, and is known for his modern, beautiful takes on traditional silhouettes. He's the most in-demand bridal designer in town, and his highly anticipated Raya collections are always stunning. And sold out.
Innovator of the year: Joe Chia
Joe Chia’s work is most often described as experimental and avant-garde, but he also has a surprising love for artisanship and traditional techniques. He experiments with both obsolete forms of stitching and new technology, creating clothes that are stylish lessons in modernity.
Digital influencer of the year: Daphne Charice
"Daphne's honesty, wide-ranging interests and edgy personal style have earned her a devoted online following of fans, ELLE among them," said Kate Guest. We love Daphne for her style and impeccable food photos - and so do over 150,000 people.
2016 Woman of style: Kim Raymond
"Kim never puts a foot wrong when it comes to her personal style, and although she often veers towards edgier looks, she is always willing to mix things up, and proves that you can wear anything if you know how to mix it right," said Kate Guest. "We love that she is daring in her style choices and never plays it safe."
2016 Man of style: Brian See
"Brian See shows young men the modern way to dress in 2016. He isn't afraid to just go for it with his outfit choices and is always impeccably put together in a way that feels urban, fresh and youthful," said Kate Guest.
