Social media cleanse diary: Day 5
What really killed me on my cleanse today: not being able to Snap my first official homemade Chinese New Year dinner
It's the eve of Chinese New Year today and while the rest of my family has already driven back to Ipoh, I'm taking the train down to join them. As usual, being surrounded by other humans on their phones only makes me feel more self-conscious that I'm not on mine. However, as I wasn't distracted by Facebook, I was able to live out my music-video dream as I watched the passing kampong scenery while Bruno Mars crooned in my ears.
This is the first time in three years that I'm properly celebrating Chinese New Year as I was previously studying in America. What really kills me on my cleanse today: not being able to Snap my first official homemade Chinese New Year dinner and just enviously watching my brother InstaStory our entire meal. Thankfully, the good food made up for it.
After dinner, the most social-media worthy thing happens: a sparrow flies into my grandmother's house and then flies around and around the room. Bear in mind, it's like 9pm. My whole family starts freaking out but my mum being my mum she manages to catch the little fella with her bare hands. I instinctively run to my phone, thinking of how randomly awesome this would look like on InstaStory, only to realise that's not happening. Now all I have is the memory of petting the bird's little head while she was perched on my mum's finger – what a prosperous way to ring in the year of the rooster, am I right?
