Zayn Malik is collaborating with Versus Versace
"There's no brand I'd rather design for than Versus"
Zayn Malik, former One Direction member and one-half of the internet's favourite celeb couple, has another huge fashion deal in the works. He will design a collection for Versus Versace and star in two of the brand's advertising campaigns.
Donatella Versace, who spoke of the collaboration with The New York Times after the recent Versus show at London Fashion Week, said that while she was not a fan of One Direction, she was fascinated by how mysterious the 23-year-old seemed to be.
"But then I met him again when he started to date Gigi, who I work with all the time," Donatella said. "And he impressed me very much – he was so mature, so thoughtful, treated her like such a gentleman. They are very nice young people, a lovely couple, in fact. And then he told me how much he loved fashion. It was then I knew he was the right face for what I had in mind."
Versus Versace has been without a creative director since Anthony Vaccarello left earlier this year to join Saint Laurent, so Zayn x Versus makes for an exciting new episode at the brand. The collection launches worldwide from May 2017 and will comprise menswear and womenswear. Zayn will also be the face of the brand's SS17 campaign and another later in the year. It's a big deal, of course, but Donatella is certain that this won't be just another regular celebrity collaboration.
"Many celebrities do clothing lines that just aren't relevant," she said. "This one? It will be. He's smart to do it with me."
Speaking of relevance, One Direction has over 30 million Twitter followers and Zayn has 20 million of his own. It's easy to expect that the collection will be popular by default.
"I think Versus has always been a very cool brand," the singer said in a statement. "It's a great brand for me and for people in my generation. I've always wanted to design clothes, and there's no brand I'd rather design for than Versus. The bonus is that I get to collaborate with Donatella, whom I love and admire. I know we'll create something amazing."
Brace yourselves, we might be looking at the next collaboration of the year.
