The Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize has been cancelled
The £25,000 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize has been cancelled amidst controversy around the Sultan of Brunei
The Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize traditionally awards upcoming designers with £25,000. But this year it's been cancelled, "due to other newly created similar awards" according to a spokesperson for the Dorchester Collection. "We are considering options of new initiatives involving supporting young talent from a variety of sectors. As and when a decision is reached an announcement will be made."
It's been widely speculated that the cancellation is due to the recent controversy surrounding hotel group owner the Sultan of Brunei, who has implemented sharia law in Brunei and incurred the wrath of more than a few influential fashion personalities. Brian Atwood and Peter Som encouraged a boycott of the Dorchester Collection group's properties, and many names have followed suit, including the whole Saint Laurent fashion house.
