Scha Alyahya stars on the cover of ELLE Malaysia's March issue
The Malaysian actress talks about her family, feminism, and how she was unsure about being in the entertainment industry
Scha Alyahya wears the statement T-shirt of the season on the cover of the March issue of ELLE Malaysia. In the month we celebrate International Women's Day it's the perfect ode to gender equality, and Scha is the perfect woman for it. With more than 3.6million followers and counting, the 33-year-old Kedah-born actress keeps climbing the career ladder, despite her initial reluctance.
Scha was once an AirAsia flight attendant, but her life changed when she won the Dewi Remaja beauty contest, and the acting world beckoned. But as she told ELLE's Emma Chong Johnston, she still questions her acting career. Why? "I'm quite a shy person, I don't really talk much. I didn't know anything about the entertainment industry until I started. I was unsure; I was too young. And 10 years later, here I am! Still acting. Still contemplating, actually."
With fame comes pressure, but Scha says she's learned to deal with it. Her husband Awal Ashaari and their daughter Lara Alana are the light of her life, and she keeps busy with many other ventures outside acting, including the new fragrance line SchaxAwal. All this talk of success and confidence leads us to broach the subject of feminism with her.
"Honestly, I don't really know what a feminist is," Scha said. "Nazim Othman called me a feminist, because he said I always want the same opportunities as men in all aspects of life. Is that correct?"
Scha gets it, even if she thinks she doesn't. Read the full story in the March 2017 issue of ELLE Malaysia. Download the digital edition here, or find it on newsstands now.
