Malaysian designer Andrew Gan dies
He passed away after suffering a heart attack in Hong Kong yesterday
Today, the Malaysian fashion industry mourns the loss of yet another brilliant designer, Andrew Gan, who died at age 55 after reportedly suffering a heart attack in Hong Kong on 13 April. The eccentric designer, well-known for his eye for details, is considered one of the pioneers in the country's fashion industry.
"He's the kindest and most generous man I have ever known. We have always supported each other. Our friendship goes a long way," said Gillian Hung, president of the Malaysian Official Designer's Association (MODA).
Fellow designer Melinda Looi has also expressed her grief.
"I met him at MODA when I became a member in 1995," Looi said. "I then went to his boutique, which was bursting with breathtaking designs. It made me wish that I could own a gorgeous boutique like that one day."
Before making a name for himself in the local fashion scene, Gan spent five years studying fashion history in Tokyo, Japan. He then spent another eight years in Hong Kong before heading back to Malaysia to start his designing career.
You will be missed, Andrew Gan.
