Maison Margiela film premieres at Tribeca Film Festival
The new short documentary is fittingly called 'The Artist Is Absent'
Here's another fashion film to add to your must-watch list: The Artist Is Absent. The documentary, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last Saturday, explores the life and work of reclusive Belgian designer Martin Margiela.
Martin's famous elusiveness proved to be a challenge for New York-based director Alison Chernick, who has also directed documentaries about artists Jeff Koons and Roy Lichtenstein. "I realised that there was no press and no footage of Martin, so that was obviously going to become a major challenge. And then it was like, 'How am I going to tell this story?' Alison told The Cut.
Will we finally see the extremely private fashion designer captured on film? The good news is that we'll only have to wait a week to find out. The documentary was produced by the Yoox group, and will air on their websites Yoox, Shoescribe and The Corner next Monday, April 27. In the meantime, watch a teaser clip here.
