June/July 2017 issue editor's letter
South Korean model and actress Shin Min A stars on the cover of ELLE Malaysia's June/July issue
I am a big believer in dressing up on holiday, and not just for the Instagram opportunities. Holiday wardrobes, like fragrances, are hugely evocative, not to mention a chance to try on different versions of yourself. You'll recall the steamy Sicilian night you danced until dawn in the piazza far better if you are wearing an off-the-shoulder red dress and some jangly earrings instead of a plain old T-shirt and jeans – and I guarantee you'll have more fun too.
Our annual travel issue is one of my favourites to work on, not least because holiday fashion is as fun to look at as it is to wear. The bright colours, clashing patterns and, let's face it, pretty zany designs (you'll find pom-poms and pineapples on pages 42 and 45) are an escape in themselves. Even if you don't have a holiday on the horizon, in Malaysia's climate you can get away with adding a tropical touch or two to your everyday look, so why not try a coral lipstick for day or wear ribbon-tied sandals with your suit?
While pom-poms and pineapples definitely have their place (namely, poolside), this season I'm aiming for something a little more grown up. That's probably why I can't stop staring at our Heaven and Earth fashion shoot on page 86. Easy dresses in earthy colours, worked into fresh shapes for added fashion points and worn with statement jewellery and flat shoes? Exactly the kind of thing I want to wear on vacation this year.
Elsewhere this issue we ask whether holiday romances are a good idea (page 62), and four frequent flyers examine the reasons they love to travel (page 58). In our Living section, editors from ELLE's 10 other Asian editions share their favourite shopping haunts in their home cities (and the one hotel they recommend above all others), then we head to New York for a peek inside a Greenwich Village townhouse that proves an all-white interior needn't be clinical or cold.
I'd love to hear where you are travelling to this year, and what you're packing (we make some suggestions on page 48). Drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org before you take off!
