It's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia's 20th anniversary in 2015, and the birthday celebrations began in fine fashion last night with Ellery first on the schedule.

Perth-born designer Kym Ellery is the only Australian designer currently showing at Paris Fashion Week, so while the rest of the designers on the schedule this week will showcase their Spring/Summer 15/16 collections, Ellery showed the Autumn/Winter 2015 collection that she first presented in Paris in March. Model Bambi Northwood Blyth and bloggers Margaret Zhang, Zanita Whittington and Sara Donaldson (from our new favourite show Fashion Bloggers) were among the front-row crowd.

But all eyes were on Ellery's (very long) runway. The show started with a performance by The Australian Ballet, which was followed by Gemma Ward (another Perth native, and now officially 'back' as a model after a 10-year hiatus) in the first look: a stunning black silk satin, floor-length dress.

There was a certain kind of 1970s nostalgia flowing throughout the 30-piece collection (bell-bottoms and flared sleeves were abundant), but with a new spin on volume and a futuristic palette of black, white, grey and blue. Fabrics were mainly suede, brocade, silk wool, appliquéd lace and metallic fringing.

After the show, Kym Ellery ran the length of the glitter-filled runway to thank the audience, luckily avoiding contact with an angry man who crashed the show to complain about the noise. And that was just the first day of Australian fashion week!
