Making magazines is an exciting job, and never more so than in the months when we officially usher in a new season. You’ve already seen pieces from Autumn/Winter 2015 in our August magazine, but it’s the fabled September issue that truly showcases the season’s key trends. Check out our runway report to see what you’ll be wearing not just for the next six months, I sincerely hope, but for a lifetime.

Although I’ve worked in fashion magazines for a while now, this was the first season I had the chance to attend the shows. As I discovered (to my detriment), seeing a collection in the flesh makes it so much harder to resist buying. My highlight was Marni, where Consuelo Castiglioni sent out a parade of feminised warriors in wrap tunics, statement belts and hyper-pigmented python boots, with fur stoles artfully arranged across their shoulders to reinforce the imagery of the returning hunter. It was elegant to its bones, but my wallet and I are no longer speaking.

If only I were a rich wife of the Upper East Side — the women who got everybody talking when Primates of Park Avenue was published in June. When the ELLE team heard about their ‘wife bonuses’ our first thought was that kind of thing totally happens here. Our fashion reads this month are truly stellar, with a number of exclusives. Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy talks models and muses; journalist Robert Murphy visits Céline’s new Paris headquarters, which were designed by Phoebe Philo herself (as much as I loathe the ‘superwoman’ tag it certainly comes to mind); and models Amber Chia, Tengku Azura and others recall their first jobs in the industry (hint: it’s not all glamour).

At ELLE it’s our job to discover the similarities between collections, to give them context, and to apply pithy labels we call ‘trends’. That’s a lot of fun, yet the more enduring appeal of fashion is how it makes us feel, not how we look to others when we wear it. I hope the September issue leaves you feeling inspired, enlightened and yes, ready to shop… if only to join me on the blacklist of wallets everywhere.
