January 2016 issue editor's letter
Jennifer Lawrence stars on the cover of ELLE's January issue
There were many 'favourite moments' in Dior and I, the documentary about Raf Simons' arrival and immersion into the world of Dior in 2012, which culminated in the presentation of his first couture collection for the house. One of the most memorable was when the cameras scanned over the rapt face of Jennifer Lawrence sitting front row at her very first fashion show. In an industry where icy froideur is the convention, Lawrence made no attempt to hide her wide-eyed wonder, and I was completely charmed by her authenticity. It's this realness that has made the world fall in love with the Oscar-winning actress, and this month we are thrilled to have her as our first cover girl for 2016. Wearing Dior, of course.
Speaking of 2016, it's the time of year when we talk about new leaves and fresh starts. On the one hand, I'm allergic to New Year's resolutions. You either fail and feel guilty or succeed and become unbearably smug. On the other, I love change and am positively Pollyanna-ish about how much of it is possible for myself and everyone I know. So at ELLE, we decided to avoid the resolution bandwagon while still embracing change by starting early. Four of us chose to address an area of our lives where we'd become stale or overly safe, whether it meant sacrificing something we love (seeing our beauty editor go without makeup for a week was both hysterical and worrying) or embracing something we loathe. Turn to page 86 to see how we fared.
Many of you are probably getting ready to jet off on holiday, in which case you should turn immediately to page 64 for our suggestions of swimsuits, sandals and street style inspiration to make this your most chic escape ever. (I've already ordered the Zimmermann bikini!)
One of the most fun stories we worked on this month can be found on page 34, where we do a little trend forecasting and come up with 30 things to be excited about this year, whether in fashion, beauty, the arts or pop culture (because we can't resist the unicorn emoji). We'd love to hear what you're looking forward to in 2016, and you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. In the meantime, I wish you all the best with those resolutions – but please don't rub it in if you succeed!
