December 2017 issue editor's letter
Model Aaliyah Hydes stars on the cover of ELLE Malaysia's December issue
The end of the year is always an exciting time. There are all those parties to get dressed up for, presents to give (and receive, fingers crossed), and a new diary full of pristine blank pages waiting to be filled. Even though I don't make any concrete new year resolutions, I do let myself get carried away with wild optimism for all the new possibilities on the horizon.
This year was slightly different. I still didn't commit to any specific resolutions, but I chose a word to live by: "make". I wanted to get back in touch with my creative side outside of work, and while I have been partly successful (the pottery lessons are yet to happen, but I have embarked on other creative projects), the two most significant things I "made" this year were both surprises. The first was a baby (only one-third complete – I'm due next May). The second was the decision to move on from my role at ELLE.
The former was obviously an exciting and happy situation. The latter is tinged with sadness, but the time feels right. Since day one at ELLE, when our team was just four people and the magazine was still six months from launch, I've felt at home here. I live 10 hours and three countries away from my nearest family (husband not included), so feeling part of one among my colleagues has been a blessing I can't even begin to measure. Professionally, I'm so proud of what we have achieved together – a fashion magazine with a feminist voice and an irreverent tone – and I look forward to seeing ELLE's commitment to fashion, feminism and fun continue in a new way in 2018.
I'm a big fan of the "French goodbye", when you slip out the door at a party without actually saying goodbye to anyone, leaving people to wonder whether you've just gone to the shop for more wine or you're never coming back. With ELLE being a Frenchborn magazine, I did wonder if I could slip away with one here, simply write my letter as usual without saying au revoir. But of course, I could never really do that to you, our readers who have meant so much to all of us here at ELLE. So from the bottom of my heart I wish you all the success, style, laughs and adventures you deserve in 2018. And friends, it's definitely not goodbye, but à bientôt! See you again soon.
