[Updated 19 March 2015] Pharrell Williams has been announced as the recipient of this year's Fashion Icon Award, which was awarded to Rihanna last year.

"If cool was a person, it would be Pharrell, not just for his looks and sense of style but for his kindness and openness. I cannot imagine anyone not seduced by him," Diane von Fürstenberg said of the 41-year-old singer, record producer and fashion designer.

Upon being announced by CFDA president Diane von Fürstenberg as this year's recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Award, 72-year-old Betsey Johnson jumped onstage to make an impromptu speech.

"I am so sorry, I just want to say this is the ultimate beyond, Oh My F G moment and I didn't think I would ever want it because I didn't want to be 72," said the designer, who is famous for her eccentric and often colourful creations. "I love our club, I love what you have done with it. I love the money we have raised for AIDs and breast cancer and beyond."

Other CFDA Fashion Awards nominees announced yesterday include The Row's Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, last year's Womenswear Designer of the Year winner Joseph Altuzarra, Rag & Bone's Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, Tom Ford, Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez and Alexander Wang. The Row's and Proenza Schouler's designers are nominated for both the Womenswear Designer and Accessory Designer award categories.

The CFDA Fashion Awards will be held on 1 June at Lincoln Center in New York. See which other brands were nominated here.
