Bata gets an edgy makeover from Comme des Garçons
The shoe manufacturer collaborates with Rei Kawakubo's label to relaunch the classic Bata tennis shoe
Charles Pignal, the great-grandson of founder Tomás Bata, said that it is unusual for Bata to do collaborations. However, he recognised that working on the classic shoe with the cult Japanese label "seemed like a great opportunity."
"I don't think we ever seriously discussed any brand other than Comme des Garçons," Charles said. "We pitched them the project, they liked the shoe and its authentic story, and they agreed to work with us. Comme des Garçons was so clear in what they wanted to bring to the shoe. Our product development manager told me he'd rarely seen such a precise approach from an external source. It was incredibly exciting for us to work on something new and unexpected like this. I hope that customers will be just as excited. And surprised." (We are – though we're not surprised to see dots starring.)

Comme des Garçons CEO Adrian Joffe said that the France-based label instantly took up the opportunity to put the Bata tennis in its flagship stores.
"We greatly admire authenticity, simplicity and tradition," Joffe said. "Bata Tennis is the perfect epitome of these things."
