'I began to feel as though I was being sucked dry, like they wanted to steal my identity while trying to homogenise things,' former Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière famously said of his time at the house. Now Balenciaga are claiming that those words caused material injury to the brand, and as such Ghesquière was in breach of his contract in which he agreed to "refrain from declarations that could hurt the image of Balenciaga".

Balenciaga is seeking roughly $9.4 million in damages from Nicolas Ghesquière, based on the comments he made in the 2013 interview he gave to System magazine. The two met in court on July 1, where Ghesquiere's representative Michel Laval claimed that the comments were not intended to be critical of Balenciaga, but of the fashion industry. "He gives the point of view of the designer," Laval said. "He is expressing a general opinion, personal impressions and paying homage to the house."

An official verdict will be made on August 27 if no settlement is reached before then.
