Balenciaga reimagines the RM2 Ikea bag

It might cost US$2,145 but at least it saves us 20 cents on plastic bags!

Well played, IKEA.

The fashion world never sleeps; today's style surprise is courtesy of French luxury fashion house Balenciaga. In its latest bid to appeal to consumers who value the practicality that comes with large shopping bags, the brand has released a US$2,145 (approx. RM9,455) version of Ikea's hardy Frakta bag, which is sold for RM2.

What's different about Balenciaga's re-imagined copy? Nothing except for the lack of Ikea's unmistakable logo printed onto the straps and its material. Called the Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag and sold on (it doesn't ship here, sorry), the bag's price tag is justified by its material that's constructed out of "blue wrinkled, glazed leather".

Ikea's pretty excited about having inspired Balenciaga though. "We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents [in US$]. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!" the Swedish chain told in an email.

This isn't the first time that Balenciaga has been inspired by more affordable pieces; remember the $3,670 blanket bag and the $2,025 market bag?
