Andrej Pejic becomes Andreja Pejic
The previously androgynous model reveals that she has undergone sex reassignment surgery
Andrej Pejic has always wanted to be a girl, and now, she has the body she's always dreamt of, as well as a new name, Andreja.
The Serbian-born model underwent sex reassignment surgery earlier this year, saying that "I want to share my story with the world because I think I have a social responsibility. I hope that by being open about this, it becomes less of an issue."
She revealed that "One of my earliest memories is spinning around in my mom's skirt trying to look like a ballerina."
However, she had to tone that down a little after starting school in Australia with her brother and friends. "I kept my dreams and my imagination to myself and became pretty good at acting as a boy. But I was hiding who I was," she told People.
Andreja is grateful for how the Internet showed her all those years ago that what she wanted was possible. With support from her family, she shot to fame as an androgynous model before finally having her sex changed. "My biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body," she said. "I have to be true to myself and the career is just going to have to fit around that."
Being able to model for both men and women's fashion, one of her most iconic modelling moments was when she walked Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2011 couture show as the bride. The 22-year-old has also been cast in upcoming Sofia Coppola film, The Little Mermaid.
