Four days after announcing the decision to show Gucci Cruise 2017 in London, it's been announced that the house's creative director, Alessandro Michele, will be awarded the International Fashion Designer of the Year prize at this year's British Fashion Awards, to be held next Monday, 23 November.

"Alessandro Michele is a phenomenon at Gucci. His exciting eclectic aesthetic has made an overnight impact on global fashion trends. It is not just that he has made the brand covetable and the product so desirable," said Natalie Massenet in a statement. "He has also reinvigorated the retail experience, bringing back playfulness and magic to the flagship store. This is a man who has his customer in his heart and celebrates them."

The creative, romantic mash ups of print, colour and texture that Alessandro has turned into Gucci signatures, as seen at the most recent Spring/Summer 2016 show in Milan have won fans among customers and critics alike.

The designer also told the UK's Telegraph newspaper why he chose to hold Gucci's Cruise show to London next year. "London's where my career at Gucci began," he said. "My first office was in Tom's studio. I'm obsessed with British culture, past and present. I am deeply in love with this country and its gorgeous history."
