5 great moments from Michael Kors AW17
It's Ashley Graham's first major runway show
Michael Kors presented his Autumn Winter 2017 collection yesterday and it was a huge one that was all about 'sensual strength'. From Ashley Graham's memorable runway appearance to an orchestra performance, here are five things you need to know about Michael Kors' show.
1. It was Ashley Graham's first NYFW show
The plus-size model may be a familiar face on magazine covers but this is actually her first time on the fashion week runway (about time, right?). Including her in his line-up of models was also a first for Kors, as he had previously told USA Today that "the only reason we don't have plus size on the runway, for me to have the range of sizes I would have to have a football stadium filled with clothes before I was able to put on a fashion show." (Keep going, Michael.)
2. Kors had his muses walk in his show
Besides the modern day It Girls like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, Kors' cast included some of his muses: veteran supermodels Amber Valetta, Carolyn Murphy, and Natasha Poly.
3. There was an orchestra performing live
To set the mood and background for his sophisticated collection, Kors had an orchestra perform at his runway show.
4. The innovative shoulder robes
You know how you love wearing your jackets and coats draped over your shoulders? Michael Kors noticed, and improved the trend by designing coats that let you slip your arms through slits on the side. The best part? You can still button the slits up and use the sleeves the normal way. Everything we never knew we needed.
5. The schmoo
Many of the looks came with a sweater-like piece tied around the neck, which is being called the schmoo. Think of it as the perfect travelling companion; we'll never get on a plane without it from now on.
You should also know: Selected pieces from the collection are available now
Kors hasn't boarded the see-now-buy-now bandwagon, but he's probably testing the waters – he's made selected items from the AW17 collection available online in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Canada.
