A recap of Asia's Next Top Model 5: Episode 2
The claws officially come out and judge Yu Tsai makes his season debut
In the second episode of Asia's Next Top Model Season 5, we saw the contestants' real personalities and let's just say, some girls do not hold back. Curious? Read on to find out what you missed.
You know the competition is in full throttle when the contestants start talking about one another behind their backs. The episode started off with a few girls talking about Filipino contestant Maureen and how they feel she's 'fake'; one of them even said "It costs zero dollars to be real." We sense a storm brewing.
For this week's challenge, it was all about interpretive dance and spelling out letters through body movements. The top three performers from last week got to choose their teams and they had 30 minutes to choreograph and perform a given word by mentor Cara. For added incentive, the winning group would be rewarded with a day of pampering. You could literally see the excitement on every face! After some pretty graceful (and some odd) performances, Maureen's group won the challenge.
Once the challenge scores were revealed, more drama ensued. Heidi from Thailand was devastated by her low score and ended up venting her frustration by punching a tree. "I'm a Virgo, so I'm a perfectionist," she said. We just feel bad for the poor tree.
At the dining table, Filipino contestant Jennica, who prides herself in being a good dancer but didn't end up with a high challenge score, made this remark: "Some people on top don't deserve to be on top." Throw on your sunglasses because the shade is real. Maureen obviously felt that Jennica's comment was directed at her, but all Jennica had to say was, "This is not a beauty pageant, it's Asia's Next Top Model." Meow!
This week's photoshoot was themed 'My signature smile' and the best photo of the week would also become the new face of Colgate Optic White (more on that later). Maureen ended up doing amazingly, while Jennica kind of flopped – we call it karma. Another surprising note: Singaporean Layla bounced back from her breakdown last week.
The judging panel
This week, Thai supermodel and actress, "Lukkade" Metinee Kingpayom acted as guest judge alongside regulars, head judge Cindy and mentor Cara. Speaking of a face we were estatic to see...
...Yu Tsai is here!
Praise to the Top Model gods because the almighty Yu Tsai has finally made his AsNTM Season 5 debut, and it was so worth the wait. As a famed photographer who's worked with top names in the industry, Yu Tsai is perfect as the show's creative director and he brings sass and wit to the judging panel.
Two of our favourite quotes from Yu Tsai
1. "Know your mouth, know your gums," he told Indonesian contestant Clara about how to smile.
2. "I might as well look at a picture of a dog with its tongue sticking out," was his sassy reaction to Thailand contestant Dorothy's picture (translation: he did not like it).
Despite Yu Tsai's disapproval, Dorothy still won best picture of the week with her playful smile. Heidi and Jennica found themselves in the bottom two but ultimately, we said goodbye to Heidi.
Malaysian contestants Shikin Gomez and Alicia Amin didn't fare too well this week; Shikin received some pretty harsh critiques from the judges (Yu Tsai said her smile wasn't authentic) and Alicia ended up in the bottom three. But we're still rooting for you, girls!
Episode 3 will feature one of the most anticipated Top Model moments – makeover time! Get some popcorn ready; it's going to be a good one.
Asia's Next Top Model Season 5 airs every Wednesday night at 9pm on StarWorld, Astro channel 711 and 722 HD.
