[Updated 14 April 2014] Venus Williams released a statement, announcing her withdrawal from the BMW Malaysian Open 2014 as she is recovering from a severe strep throat infection. She will still be in KL to honour her obligations to the sponsors and attend the Women@Work Forum on 17 April 2014.

Thirty-two players from the World Tennis Association (WTA) will compete for the singles title and doubles title at the BMW Malaysian Open 2014. Heating things up on the court, three-time World No. 1 and Olympic winner Venus Williams is to participate in the tournament at the Royal Selangor Golf Club from the 14th to the 20th of April.

"I am looking forward to my first visit to Malaysia and meeting my fans from the region. Terima kasih BMW Malaysian Open for giving me the opportunity and looking forward to seeing you at the tournament this April," said Venus, who launched her fashion line, EleVen in 2007.

Other tennis powerhouses to feature at the tournament are Dominika Cibulkova, as well as former BMW Malaysian Open champions Karolina Pliskova (2013), and Hsieh Su-Wei (2012).

The players are also up for world ranking points – where Venus's sister, Serena Williams currently leads in the singles chart – and an increased prize purse of US$250,000.
