Damsels in distress are no more. The new Wonder Woman trailer does not only tease us about what's to come in the film, but also emphasises how Gal Gadot's Diana Prince is no female sidekick to anyone. At the 1:20 marker, she and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) are attacked in an alley and shot at, but she's the one protecting him from the bullet. It is the opposite of what happens in Superman (the 1978 film starring Christopher Reeve).

And then there's also the bit where Diana complains about movement-restricting gowns that women wear in that era – we've loved Wonder Woman before, we love her even more now. Entertainment Weekly deciphered a few other references that were made in the trailer, which avid fans would have already picked up, and any newbie will still find fascinating. Wonder Woman opens in local cinemas on 1 June 2017; we cannot wait.
