[Updated 22 January 2015] Just when we were still mulling over the possibility of Jake Gyllenhaal taking up Rick Flagg's mantle, it has been speculated that the actor doesn't intend to take on the role (sigh). And so the search for Rick Flagg continues.

[Updated 16 January 2015] Tom Hardy has dropped out of Suicide Squad, reportedly because of other film commitments including world promos for Mad Max: Fury Road, which opens in May. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has already approached Jake Gyllenhaal to play Rick Flagg. The Nightcrawler actor is currently on Broadway production Constellations, so it remains to be seen if he'll get into the Squad in time for when filming starts in April this year.

Suicide Squad's villains-turned-superheroes-by-force are that much closer to being materialised. Warner Bros. has put names and faces to each of the characters. Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Will Smith, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne are all set to take up the mantles of some of DC's famed villains.

Here's a lowdown of who's who:

Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, the squad's leader (this will be Tom's second DC role after Bane).

Jared Leto as the Joker (Jared will so have to shave his beard).

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joker's on-again, off-again girlfriend.

Will Smith as Deadshot (an enemy of Batman).

Cara Delevingne as Enchantress (a sorceress).

Jai Courtney as Boomerang (an adversary of the Flash).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jesse Eisenberg was not included in the Warner Bros. announcement, but it is still possible that the actor who will play Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may make a cameo appearance in Suicide Squad.

Yet to be cast is Amanda Waller, the person who assembles the team (think of her as the DC version of Marvel's Nick Fury). Variety reports that Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey are being considered for the role. Fury's David Ayer will direct and screenwrite.

We've got a while before the Suicide Squad unleashes chaos in 2016, so before then, you can look for Tom in Mad Max: Fury Road, Cara in Pan, Will and Margot in Focus, and Jai in Terminator: Genisys. Sorry, Leto fans but there's no screentime between Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad for Jared yet.
