No Li Shang in Disney's live action 'Mulan'

First no music, now this? What will our ancestors say?

If you think that it's bad enough that Disney may not feature any of the catchy songs from the original Mulan animated film in the live action remake, then you're going to be enraged to know that Mulan's love interest, General Li Shang will NOT be in the new film either. Shang (and his amazing back muscles) will be replaced by a new male lead character called Chen Honghui.

A Disney casting call for Mulan describes the newcomer as a bit of bully who is "determined to be the best soldier in human history", and who realises that Mulan is his biggest rival. Eventually, "his intense feelings of rivalry turn into something very different, something like love."

"I haven't started [filming] yet so I can't give you any real detail," director Niki Caro told ScreenCrush. "But the budget and the location and the story [are] offering such scope to me for [an] incredible, muscular piece of girly martial arts extravaganza in China. And I can't wait."

Mulan, the woman who saved China and broke gender stereotypes will be portrayed in a "big, girly martial arts epic"? What will our ancestors say? (Dishonour on your whole family, dishonour on you, dishonour on your cow.) This leaves us wondering if we'll get to see any of the other beloved characters from the original at all. You can't have Mulan without a Mushu. Or without I'll Make a Man Out of You.

We'll just let Twitter tell you how we feel. Because getting songs and Shang in Mulan is worth fighting for.
