'La La Land' wrongly announced, 'Moonlight' wins Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards

"This is not a joke!"

In a shocking twist of events at the 89th Academy Awards, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read out the wrong Best Picture winner. Faye announced La La Land, and the producers went onstage for the acceptance speech, but it took a few moments before co-producer Jordan Horowitz confirmed that it was Moonlight had actually won.

*GASP!*

"This is not a joke!" Jordan said onstage, to a cheering audience that was on their feet, applauding the cast and crew of Moonlight.

Warren later explained what happened: "I opened the envelope, and I read Emma Stone, La La Land. That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny."

It also was not because Emma Stone left her winner's card lying around.

Well, someone from backstage is about to get into a lot of trouble.

Oscar flub aside, La La Land still took home the most wins this year, with six awards out of its 14 nominations. Emma Stone won Best Actress, and Damien Chazelle won Best Director of course, and La La Land's music was honoured with the Original Song (City of Stars) and Original Score awards.

Moonlight's Mahershala Ali won Best Actor in a Supporting Role, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar ever, as well as the first African American actor to win an Oscar since Forest Whitaker in 2006 (The Last King of Scotland).

In other musical celebrations, Moana star Auli'i Cravalho performed How Far I'll Go after songwriter Lin Manuel Miranda gave a short monologue (in rap!) and it was absolutely flawless. Note that this is the Hawaiian native's first ever Oscars, and that stage must have been one hell of a place to be for any 16-year-old, AND she got slapped in the head a little by one of the large flags, but she nailed every single note. Her expression at end of the song looks like relief, but all we see is Hollywood's next big star.

La La Land anthem City of Stars was performed by John Legend. He also added Audition into the medley, backed by the night's most romantic set.

Last year's Best Actress winner Brie Larson went to congratulate Emma Stone on her achievement – the latter could be heard crying into Brie's shoulder.
