Funny or Die's Trump biopic stars Johnny Depp
How convincing is Depp as Donald Trump? We can't even
Picture Johnny Depp, topped off with a furl of gloriously bad combed-over hair, bleached eyebrows, in a stuffy suit, saying, "The only thing with more brass is my balls". Can't? We couldn't imagine it either, until we saw the trailer of Depp playing Donald Trump in a fake biopic-slash-parody, Funny or Die Presents Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal: The Movie.
Humour website Funny or Die has created an hour-long spoof of the Presidential candidate, it's title based on his best-selling business advice book from 1987. Expect Trump barbs ("Somebody remove Ivana from the set because she's killing me") and loads of celeb cameos including Ron Howard, Michaela Watkins as Ivana Trump, Patton Oswalt as Merv Griffin, Henry Winkler as Mayor Ed Koch, and Alf, Trump's best man at his wedding. Yes, Alf, the cat-eating alien from that 80s sitcom.
How convincing is Depp's version of Trump? The New York accent could have used a touch more sleaze, but the pokes at Trump are spot-on. Funny or Die's Editor-in-Chief Owen Burke described his performance as "absolutely bananas". “Because we tend to move so fast, we’re usually just slapping wigs on people,” he said. “But Johnny brought, like, a whole team of professionals to help him get into character. Or at least style his hair.”
Depp's played some loony characters before, but this is somehow weirder than Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter combined. Will it boost or hinder Trump's presidential campaign? Publicity or not, after watching this, picturing Trump as leader of the free world will send you screaming and running into the blue yonder. It certainly did for us.
Watch the movie here. Before you vote. If you're American.
