First look: Sir Ian McKellen is the new Sherlock Holmes
Gandalf lends his powers to the new Sherlock Holmes movie
Sir Ian McKellen has announced his newest role on Twitter – and it's not what you might expect. He's taking on the iconic role of Sherlock Holmes but – calm down, Cumbercookies – not in the award-winning Steven Moffat-Mark Gatiss TV show Sherlock. Sir Ian will be playing the detective at age 93 in the movie Mr Holmes.
"Sherlock Holmes at 93 is retired, still solving mysteries: but here's the sting – he also keeps bees," said Sir Ian. "So many splendid actors have already played the part but none of them had Bill Condon directing. I'm the lucky one: and I'm excited."
The movie is based on Mitch Cullin's novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, and follows Sherlock Holmes attempting to solve his final case while dealing with the loss of his powers. Laura Linney will star as Sherlock's housekeeper Mrs Munro. Mr Holmes has just started shooting – stay tuned for a tentative release date.
