Eddie Redmayne lands 'Fantastic Beasts' lead role
We're one step closer to seeing the Oscar-winning actor play magizoologist Newt Scamander
[Updated 2 June 2015] Mischief managed! Eddie Redmayne is officially signed on to be Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter spin-off film.
J.K. Rowling penning the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was already great news, but now with the prospect of Eddie Redmayne starring as magizoologist Newt Scamander, our excitement over the Harry Potter spin-off is at new heights.
The Theory of Everything actor had already been touted as an early contender but now Variety reports that he has been offered the role. Take it, Eddie, take it!
While interested in the part, Eddie had apparently wanted to read the finished script before agreeing to the role. Now he has, and insiders who spoke to Variety say that he's happy. If he takes the job, we'll finally be able to put a face to the wizard who wrote one of the most famous textbooks from J.K. Rowling's fictional universe.
Harry Potter director David Yates (he directed four of the franchise's films, starting from Order of the Phoenix) will helm Fantastic Beasts, which is set in New York about 70 years before Harry's time.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is scheduled to open in the US on 18 November 2016.
