Twitter is not having it with the new white character in 'Aladdin'

Why, Disney? Why?

Disney is being criticised for casting white actor Billy Magnussen as a new character called Prince Anders in the live-action Aladdin.

We've been pretty happy with the cast of Aladdin so far: Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar) and Nasim Pedra (Mara, Jasmine's handmaid, also a new character). We'll need to bite our tongue about the apparent absence of animal sidekicks Abu and Iago, but come on, does the world need a white prince who competes with our favourite street urchin-turned-prince? No. Unnecessary.

Billy, who starred in Into The Woods as Rapunzel's prince, is already receiving many comments on Instagram, calling for him to drop out of the production (just last month, Ed Skrein left the Hellboy reboot, in which he was set to play Major Ben Daimio, who is Asian in the comics). Meanwhile, fans have taken to Twitter to express their outrage at Disney's new cast member.

Disney just can't seem to get it right, huh? Remember when they took out General Li Shang from the live-action reboot of Mulan? Or when they couldn't decide if Mulan would include music? And when they were accused of stealing the concept for Inside Out? Or how they made Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog – the first ever black Disney princess – appear as a frog for the majority of her own animated movie?

At least we have this photo to help us get through the day.
