Why it's special
You'll find that everything on Botak Liquor's menu is botanically derived and they serve only pure spirits. The very name of the place itself, if said quickly out loud, sounds like 'botanical'. It's also the first and only bar in Kuala Lumpur that offers cocktails from the tap. Yeah, you read that right.
Botak also prides itself in using mostly home-grown ingredients in all of its drinks. Every glass had its contents grown, harvested and brewed under the same roof. Getting to the bar isn't a problem (although parking could be) but remember that it's hidden upstairs, above Chocha foodstore.
Take the spiral staircase up and you'll find yourself in a corridor surrounded by lush greenery that leads to the bar. Its kitschy furniture and restored-heritage-house vibe make it a great place for hanging out. Come earlier while it's still bright outside if you want to take photos.
What to drink
The menu may look overwhelming at first – so many drinks you've never heard of! But just ask the award-winning bartender, Giri Pancha for his recommendation and you're all set. You can even customise your own cocktail – pick your spirits, your tonic, and three ingredients. If it's interesting enough, you just might find your concoction a permanent offering on Botak's menu.
We recommend the Bunga Kantan x Pumpkin (RM36) – a pumpkinseed-infused vodka with calamansi, and homemade red ginger lily soda – if you want something floral and woody. Go for the Chocolate x Chilli (RM42, pictured below) if you want a kick of spiciness to go with your tequila, gin and chocolate bitters.
What to eat
Botak doesn't serve food but Chocha downstairs lets you bring your drinks there. However, you can't bring food upstairs to the bar area.
Fridays and Saturdays are really busy days for the bar so it's best to call and make reservations before going. The rest of the week is pretty quiet for Botak, making it perfect for a casual catch-up over drinks.
