6 things to know about Kind Kones, Malaysia's first vegan ice cream parlour
This new dessert spot proves that vegan treats are anything but bland
KL's newest ice cream parlour Kind Kones is here to shatter your dairy-loving taste buds and introduce you to a whole new world of vegan desserts. It has some of your favourite ice cream flavours like Salted Chocolate Chip and French Vanilla Bean, which taste just like the real thing (we promise!).
What's in a Kind Kones ice cream
All Kind Kones ice creams are vegan, meaning that they don't use any animal by-products like honey, milk and eggs. Instead, they are made with either coconut milk or nut-based milks like almond or cashew milk.
Kind Kones ice creams also contain no preservatives, no additives, no artificial flavouring and colouring, no refined sugars (coconut sugar is used in place) and no emulsifiers.
"Vegan food is not necessarily healthier but the dairy products we get these days do contain a lot of hormones," Kind Kones founder Serina S. Bajaj told ELLE. Some studies show that tumour growths are among the negative effects caused by the steroid hormones fed to dairy cows.
How Kind Kones ice creams are made
Serina used her personal experience making ice cream at home and worked with her team of in-house chefs to create these vegan treats. As these ice creams don't contain any preservatives, they last up to a week in the freezer at home (in comparison to regular ice creams, which last up to 6 months) but are best consumed within 72 hours.
"We don't keep any ice cream for more than three to four days, depending on the flavour," Serina said. So you know you're always getting a fresh scoop.
It's ice cream for everyone
Serina said many parents love that they can treat their kids to ice cream, without having to worry about chemicals, refined sugar or certain allergies. (Customers had a 30-minute wait on opening day!)
"I've had a diabetic who tried a scoop, went home and didn't have a spike in blood sugar. He came back the next day and bought two pints!" she said. Brownie points for how Kind Kones also offers customers a choice of gluten-free or vegan ice cream cones.
It's so good, it even impresses non-vegans
While Serina acknowledges that people do unfortunately associate vegan food with blandness or "rabbit food," Kind Kones ice creams do not lack flavour. The ELLE verdict: you could be fooled into thinking you were having regular ice cream.
Kind Kones offers a variety of flavours
At the moment, there are 12 flavours, including sorbets. Some bestsellers like the Salted Chocolate Chip and the Mocha Almond Chocolate Chip are staples, but certain flavour combinations will come and go. A few unusual ones include Golden Milk, which contains turmeric, candied ginger and Sweet Corn.
Kind Kones also uses seasonal fruits (they had a Jackfruit flavour!) and will introduce Durian soon. Matcha, peanut butter and cookies-and-cream flavours are also in the works.
Kind Kones has other sweet treats, too
There's a selection of baked goods to satisfy any sweet tooth. More than half of them are vegan with almost all of them gluten-free. Our top picks are the Raw 'Snickers' Bar and the Raw 'Ferrero Rocher' Bliss Ball – both do the real thing justice.
