Winona Ryder says Johnny Depp never abused her
The actress speaks up in light of her ex-boyfriend's alleged abuse of Amber Heard
Winona Ryder has said that it is "difficult and upsetting" for her to grasp the fact that her ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp is being accused of abusing his then-wife Amber Heard. Winona dated and was engaged to her Edward Scissorhands co-star until their breakup in 1993; she claimed in an interview with Time that during their 4-year relationship, he was "never abusive at all" towards her.
"He was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me," she said. "I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves. It's hard because I feel like – that's my experience."
"I wasn't there," she added, referring to Johnny's abuse of Amber. "I don't know what happened. I'm not calling anyone a liar. I'm just saying, it's difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it. Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. And we have a lot of mutual friends. I just never heard anything like that about him."
Winona finds it unimaginable that Johnny could be an abusive person, but maintains that her opinion is solely based on her experience with the actor.
"It's weird because imagine if someone you dated when you were – I was 17 when I met him – was accused of that. It's just shocking. I have never seen him be violent toward a person before," she said.
