The best moments from the 2016 Billboard Music Awards

From smashing performances to red carpet trips, see the highlights of what went down

This year's Billboard Music Awards was one jaw-dropping performance after another, with plenty of tributes and throwbacks. The main highlights of the night were The Weeknd leading the pack with a whopping eight trophies (one of which was dedicated to Prince), Adele premiered her new music video plus took home the Top Artist award, and Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton locked eyes and performed Go Ahead and Break My Heart.

1. Madonna slayed a tribute to Prince
She sang Nothing Compares 2 U, then teamed up with Stevie Wonder to belt out Purple Rain. Rihanna and The Weeknd were spotted singing along as the whole arena waved their purple wristbands. 

2. Britney Spears made a huge comeback
She brought the house down with a medley of her hits including Work Bitch and Toxic. She's still rocking lace undies, which takes us right back to the 90s.

3. Celine Dion choked up during her acceptance speeech
She cried when accepting the Icon Award, this being her first televised perfromance since the death of her husband, René Angélil. Her son René-Charles surprised her by presenting the award. 

4.Ariana Grande (almost) took a fall
Ariana tripped on the red carpet and made a spectacular recovery. She caught herself (by hanging onto a very deft E! News interviewer) and then exclaimed, "I almost broke my ass!".

5. Some of the best, sickets performances of the night
These include Demi Lovato singing her heart out to a slow version of Cool for the Summer, and Rihanna's rendition of Love on the Brain.
