I checked my calendar – it's not the 1st of April. So what, on this good earth, is Ryan Reynolds doing playing Detective Pikachu in Legendary's upcoming live-action movie?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Deadpool actor has signed on to voice the titular Pokémon alongside young stars Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) in the film directed by Rob Letterman.

The story: Justice's character's dad gets kidnapped, so he and Pikachu team up to find him. Kathryn plays a journalist who joins them in their adventure. Detective Pikachu is based on the adventure video game spin-off in the Pokémon franchise. Its portrayal in the film will reportedly be produced with motion-capture, so here's what I'm expecting.

Just kidding.

Detective Pikachu can talk, unlike his counterpart in the iconic Pokémon cartoon series – the Pikachu that belongs to trainer Ash only ever says his own name. Now imagine all that, but with Ryan's unmistakeable sarcastic voice (which BTW, is made for the chatty Deadpool). Can't do it? Watch this then.

There's no official release date yet, but all we know is that shooting starts in January in London. And now, Twitter's best reactions.
