Ryan Gosling wanted Rachel McAdams off 'The Notebook'
'The Notebook' may have had a different Allie Hamilton if Ryan Gosling got his way, reveals director Nick Cassavetes
Would you believe it if someone told you that the two people involved in the most iconic rain kiss in the history of film did not get along in real life while filming The Notebook? Yeah, we wouldn't either. But that's the truth, revealed by its director, Nick Cassavetes in a very timely manner just after the film's tenth anniversary on 25 June.
"Maybe I'm not supposed to tell this story, but [Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams] were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me... he's doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?' I said, 'What?' He says, 'I can't. I can't do it with her. I'm just not getting anything from this,'" Nick said in an interview.
That was soon resolved after Ryan and Rachel "had it out", with Rachel standing up for her character. They made their peace with each other before resuming filming, although Nick noted that "the rest of the film wasn't smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing."
At one point, Ryan – clearly very passionate about his character – suggested that Noah burn down the house he spent years building. That didn't happen, of course.
It sounds like Noah and Allie's fiery relationship could be attributed to Ryan and Rachel's similarly fiery yet rocky start in real life. The two dated on and off from 2005, before finally ending their relationship in 2007. Rachel has more recently been linked to Southpaw co-star Jake Gyllenhaal.
