Rita Ora's '7/11' cover is just what we need for Hump Wednesday
Also, Amy Poehler is Hasty Pudding's Woman of the year, Rose McGowan speaks for female directors and Stephen Fry is engaged
Taking the video out of the hotel room and into the sea, Rita and friend Elizabeth Hilfiger, daughter of Tommy (who makes a cameo) filmed aboard a pretty trippin' yacht. The pair, along with the yacht's crew and various others are jumping around, rolling, clapping, smacking, movin' side to side... Yes, we can think of no better way to get through the first Hump Wednesday of the year than by blasting this tune through the office, envisioning your next holiday and "spinnin' while my hands up".
Hasty Pudding names Amy Poehler 2015's Woman of the Year
We're hard pressed to find anything wrong with Amy Poehler. We love her, oh yes we do. And so does Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals. America's oldest theatre company has just named Amy its 2015 Woman of the Year, putting her on par with former recipients Katherine Hepburn, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Mirren. The Woman of the Year festivities will be held on 29 January and will include a parade and celebratory roast.
This honour is bestowed once a year upon one man and one woman "who have made lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment." Amy fits the bill of course. She is not only one of Saturday Night Live's favourite anchors, but has scooped a Golden Globe and multiple nominations for comedy series Parks and Recreation, written a book, is one third of the founding brains behind the empowering youth web community Smart Girls, will star as one of the voices in Disney Pixar's upcoming animation Inside Out and is set to host the Golden Globes with Tina Fey this weekend. And it seems like she's just getting started.
Rose McGowan calls out the sexism in Hollywood
Elsewhere, Rose McGowan is pointing out the dismal lack of opportunities for female directors in Hollywood. Rose, herself in the midst of working on her directorial debut, accepted the New York Film Critics Circle award for Best First Film on behalf of Jennifer Kent for The Babadook at the awards gala on Tuesday. In her acceptance speech she made an impassioned plea for greater inclusion of women in the industry.
After noting that female filmmakers make up just six per cent of the industry, she urged, "Let's give the six per cent a shot. 'Cause that represents 50 per cent of the audience, of which I am a member. I am not being served and I am not being heard. I ask you to take up the hand of the female director until we no longer say 'female director.' It is a unisex term. I am a director. Jennifer Kent is a director. Let's do smart, let's bring it. She did. I think she's thrown down the gauntlet. When they say, 'Oh, the box office is down,' it's perhaps because we don't [do] more f**king superhero movies! It's time. It's getting a little old and Jennifer is a wonderful, dedicated director and I can't wait to see what she does next."
This is not the first time Rose has spoken up for the causes she believes in. She was very vocal last November in slamming the gay community for its misogyny and for not supporting feminist causes.
British comedian Stephen Fry to wed boyfriend
Following a leak by British tabloid The Sun about Stephen Fry's engagement to boyfriend Elliott Spencer, Stephen himself took to Twitter to confirm the news.
Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!— Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) January 6, 2015
Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx— Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) January 6, 2015
Your adorable tweets are bringing me close to sobbing. Off for a walk and a blast of Jorge Bolet (thanks to @JRhodesPianist’s ace present)— Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) January 6, 2015
The 57-year-old British comedian and actor is 30 years older than Elliot, a writer, but a source told The Sun Stephen now has "a new lust for life" after years of depression and the couple, who supposedly met last year, "thrive off one another." Even Elliott's parents have given their blessings, saying, "We are very happy. We are over the moon."
Stephen has also given formal notice to wed Elliott at a registry office in Dereham, Norfolk and the wedding will likely take place in Breckland Business Centre though no date has been set yet. For all the times that Stephen has made us chuckle, we're mighty glad he's found his own reason to be so "very very happy." Congrats!
