Princess Charlene of Monaco is pregnant with Monaco's heir
Prince Albert II and his wife of three years are expecting their first child together
The Grimaldi family is expecting its first proper heir to the throne of the Principality of Monaco. South African former Olympic swimmer Charlene, Princess of Monaco and her husband, the reigning monarch Prince Albert II released a statement announcing her pregnancy.
Charlene and Albert married in July 2011, after having been linked in 2006 and engaged in June 2010. Expressing their delight, they added that the birth is expected at the end of the year. This is their first child together, although Albert II has two children from previous relationships.
The Prince Albert began his reign in April 2005 after the death of his father, Rainier III. Until his son or daughter is born, the throne of Monaco would pass to the heiress presumptive, Albert's sister Caroline. Charlene is currently known as Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco, a title once held by Albert II's mother and Rainier III's wife, American actress Grace Kelly.
