Neelofa criticised for eating non-halal escargot
The Malaysian actress's holiday photo sparks debate on Instagram
Malaysian actress and TV host Neelofa was recently on a holiday in Paris, where she sampled some escargot she described as "hands down the best escargot so far" on Instagram. Unbeknownst to her, the snail is considered not halal in Islam; it didn't take long for netizens to call her out on eating it.
"I was surprised that this started a debate among my Instagram followers," she told Harian Metro, adding that she was taught as a child that escargot is halal. "If I knew its halal status was questionable, I would not have even touched it."
A spokesperson for the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) told The Rakyat Post that the escargot has not been passed as halal, a ruling that is based on the Malaysian Fatwa council's guidelines.
The hundreds of comments on Neelofa's photo are divided in their thoughts, but a few pointed out that it is not up to anyone to judge another's actions.
One of the comments on her post said: "u cant decide whether that person doing right or wrong..Allah can. Yes, she is wrong for eating non halal food. but she didnt know that is haram. stop being so judgemental."
