Neelofa and Vivy Yusof talk about feminism at Forbes Under 30 Summit Asia
These two Malaysian trailblazers are representing our country in the best way possible
Malaysian entrepreneurs Neelofa and FashionValet's Vivy Yusof are in Manila, Philippines to attend the Forbes Under 30 Summit Asia. Both women are part of the prestigious 30 Under 30 list in the Retail & E-Commerce category and are using this platform to speak about female empowerment.
During a recent panel focusing on businesses founded by women, Neelofa shared what being a feminist means to her.
"Being a Muslim woman, I really believe in gender equality, in equal pay, freedom of choice and all the opportunities the world has to offer. Because we're all created equal – men, women, children, Muslim, Christian, Asian, American and it's not a race between men and women," she said.
The actress also shared a quote that has stuck with her: "Feminism doesn't define women in the world but women in the world define what it means to be feminine or a feminist."
Fellow 30 Under 30 honouree Vivy also revealed on Instagram that she spoke on the misconceptions of Muslim women, women empowerment and the hijab during an interview with Forbes Asia, although her interview has not yet been published.
Had a heartfelt interview with @forbesasia. I spoke about the misconceptions of Muslim women, women empowerment and what I really think of the hijab. I was very honest and might be unpopular for saying some of the things I said, but it'll be really interesting. Can't wait for the video! #duckscarves #innaired #forbes
Prior to that, the FashionValet co-founder also did an Instagram takeover for Forbes Asia, sharing a day in her life.
Skype meeting for FashionValet. This handsome hunk next to me? That's my CEO – and oh, I'm married to him too! We always get asked how we can work together as husband and wife, and how we can divide personal and work time. Truth is, there is no divide. Once an entrepreneur, you put your whole heart and soul into it, so you need to find a partner whose goals align with yours. Never make someone a business partner just because they're your loved ones. Always be logical about it and see if goals are aligned and they complement you in what you lack (and vice versa). Lucky for me, I've found the perfect partner in my husband. We argue of course, but one rule I insist on - never go to sleep angry, everything must be resolved first. —@vivyyusof #ForbesTakeover
"Hire people who are smarter than you." That's exactly what we did at FashionValet. My heads of department come from all sorts of backgrounds and experience levels, and they bring so much to the table when they're given the chance to be heard and take charge. I used to be very suffocating, I would follow up constantly and check grammar on every single banner – my hardest challenge was to delegate and let go. I've grown so much as a leader at FashionValet, and it gives me the greatest, most humbling pleasures when I see my team grow to be even better leaders than I am for their own teams. —@vivyyusof #ForbesTakeover
I'll never forget this saying I heard months ago that impacted me so much. "Sometimes, you need to disconnect to connect." As a person who is addicted to her phone and is constantly on the go, having growing children meant that I needed to give them the time they deserve. I have two gorgeous kids - Daniel, 4 and Mariam, 2. I've learned to put my phone away when I'm playing with them or putting them to bed, and I find such great joy and more meaning as a mom when I did that. I try to cook dinner everyday for my family, and our must-do every night before bed - reading a book together. #hellopeppapig. Time to turn off the lights now. Good night, everyone! –@vivyyusof #ForbesTakeover
