Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan are new parents to baby daughter Max. The couple announced the good news earlier today in a letter addressed to their daughter.

"Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You've already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in," Mark began. "Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today."

Thanks to Max, the couple was inspired to establish the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative that aims to improve this world for the next generation.

"We also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalised learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities," Mark wrote. "As we become parents and enter this next chapter of our lives, we want to share our deep appreciation for everyone who makes this possible."

He also pledged 99% of his and Priscilla's Facebook shares to the cause. That's about $45 billion (approx. RM190 billion)! Max, you have pretty cool parents. Watch the couple explain the initiative in the video below.

A few weeks before Max’s birth, Priscilla and Mark took a morning to reflect and record their hopes for their daughter and all children of her generation.
