Lily James, Ansel Elgort and Edgar Wright on the soundtrack of their lives
The stars and director of 'Baby Driver' gush about their favourite musicians and composers
Baby Driver is smashing the box office – no surprises there. Edgar Wright wrote, directed and executive-produced the action comedy, starring Ansel Elgort (Baby) and Lily James (Debora), and all three are in Kuala Lumpur today to promote the film.
Edgar has breathed new life into nail-biting car chases, blazing the trail for music – songs, not just anoriginal soundtrack – to be an integral part of the action film genre.
"It's not a musical in the sort of the traditional sense in terms of nobody really sings out loud in it," Edgar said at the press conference in the Ritz-Carlton KL this morning. "When I first pitched it to the studio, I said that it was a 'car chase movie driven by music.' That was my pitch. Because obviously it's not like Les Misérables."
He added: "I'm a big fan of musicals. I'm a big fan of action movies. So the idea of combining the two in a new and distinct way is really exciting to me."
Edgar, Lily and Ansel then told ELLE who they'd love to see write the backing music for their lives.
"Whilst he's still alive, I'd go for Lalo Schifrin," Edgar said. "He's one of my favourite composers. He did the scores for all sorts of things like Bullitt, Dirty Harry and Mission Impossible. I always liked his kind of really jazzy scores and I also listen to his music so I'd like to think that that would be my complete daily soundtrack."
"There's an old blues country singer called Eric Bibb and actually when I met him after one of his concerts, I was shaking and I said 'You've... you've been the music to my life,'" Lily gushed. "So I've already called him that so I suppose it would have to be him. He's got such soul and tells stories through his music."
Ansel had a mic-drop answer: "It would be Queen."
The actor, singer and DJ had recently narrated the second episode of Billboard's A Brief History Of, which featured Queen (and boy, is Ansel a fan!). Queen's Brighton Rock also features on the Baby Driver soundtrack. Somebody get Ansel into a musical film, please.
Baby Driver opens in Malaysian cinemas today.
