In 2011, one of model Lily Cole’s friends Lucy Moore came to her with the news that specialist bookshop Claire de Rouen was facing closure after the death of its founder, the eponymous Claire de Rouen. Lily stepped in and part-bought it with Lucy, and now calls it the best thing she owns. Claire de Rouen specialises in photography and fashion and Lily – who has a first class honours degree in art history from Cambridge – dips in and out to browse and pick out presents for friends, while Lucy manages the shop.

The story recently came to light because of Lily’s involvement with Quick Reads, an organisation that commissions short fiction from big authors for adults who aren’t confident readers. Lily features in a video for Quick Reads (below), and has taken part in numerous literacy campaigns, including The Evening Standard’s Get London Reading campaign
