Kiran Jassal, a 20-year-old aspiring dentist from Subang Jaya won the Miss Universe Malaysia 2016 title on 30 January, last Saturday. She received her crown and sash from Vanessa Tevi Kumares (our previous Miss Universe) at the awards ceremony that took place at the Palace of the Golden Horses.

"I feel really blessed to have won the crown as it is an honour to represent my country Malaysia. What I think gave me the edge over the other girls was the fact that I was always ready to take on criticisms and improve on areas that I was lacking in," Kiran said in a statement.

"I can definitely say that I have learned so much under the guidance of the team of advisors and mentors from MUMO compared to from where I first started," she added.

The new Miss Universe Malaysia beat runners-up Dhivya Dhyana, Lina Soong, and Swarna Naidu for the crown. Kiran also calls herself an avid reader and trained in classical harmonium for nine years from the age of seven.

She finished her A-Levels at Kolej Tuanku Jaafar and was accepted into the dentistry programme at International Medical University (IMU) this year. However, she now plans to defer her studies to fully commit to her Miss Universe duties.

Congratulations, Kiran!
