Kanye West releases new song, 'Only One'
The rapper has collaborated with The Beatles' Paul McCartney on the song, which was inspired by Kanye's late mother
Kanye West has officially given everyone the lullaby to sing this year. He kicked off 2015 by releasing a new song in collaboration with Paul McCartney. Only One is close to Kanye's heart as it was not only inspired by his late mother, but is sung as if his mother is speaking to Kanye through daughter North.
A press statement accompanying the release of the song revealed that Paul and Kanye were brainstorming for the song, with the former on the keyboard and the latter playing around with vocals.
"When they played back the recording afterward, something remarkable happened," the statement read. "Kanye sat there with his family, holding his daughter North on his lap, and listened to his vocals, singing, 'Hello, my only one...' And in that moment, not only could he not recall having sung those words, but he realised that perhaps the words had never really come from him."
Kanye's mother, Donda, chose the name for her son for its meaning, "only one."
The vocals have been lightly auto-tuned, but we're willing to see past it for the rousing lyrics and soulful instrumentals. "You're not perfect but you're not your mistakes." So deep.
Kim Kardashian has decided that it's her favourite song.
"Everyone asks me what my favourite Kanye song is. It's Only One," she wrote on Instagram. "Kanye felt like his mom was singing thru him to our daughter. This song makes me cry every time I hear it."
