Jennifer Lawrence opens up about the nude photo leak
"It's not a scandal. It's a sex crime." The Hunger Games actress has the final word over the mass celebrity photo hack
Jennifer Lawrence was just one of many celebrities who were victims of the infamous 4chan photo leak, which saw private photos of them released into the web. She was, however, one of those who refused to respond publicly to the hack, until now.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 24-year-old finally expressed what she felt about having nude photos of herself and other celebrities stolen. "Just because I'm a public figure, just because I'm an actress, does not mean that I asked for this," she said. "It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It's my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can't believe that we even live in that kind of world."
Keeping silent had not been Jennifer's first reaction to the crime. She admitted that she struggled to write any response, eventually even starting to write an apology before realising that she didn't have anything to be sorry for.
"I was in a loving, healthy, great relationship for four years. It was long distance, and either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he's going to look at you," she admitted.
Disturbed by how someone would want to make money out of sexually exploiting someone, Jennifer holds the offending websites answerable to what she declares isn't a scandal. "It is a sex crime," she said. "It is a sexual violation. It's disgusting."
The actress – who is to reunite with Silver Linings Playbook co-star, Bradley Cooper, in upcoming drama, Serena – confesses that she had been upset with people, including those she knows, who saw the photos of her online.
"Anybody who looked at those pictures, you're perpetuating a sexual offense. You should cower with shame. Even people who I know and love say, 'Oh, yeah, I looked at the pictures.' I don't want to get mad, but at the same time I'm thinking, I didn't tell you that you could look at my naked body."
Despite being one of Hollywood's best with three Oscar nominations (one win) in tow during what is only the start of a very bright career, telling her father about the hack wasn't easy on Jennifer.
"I promise you, anybody given the choice of that kind of money or having to make a phone call to tell your dad that something like that has happened, it's not worth it." However, she joked that "Fortunately, he was playing golf, so he was in a good mood."
Fear not, no scandal – or crime, for that matter – will stump someone as firm-minded as JLaw from climbing right out of something like this. She's already pushed away her anger and she certainly doesn't need revenge. "I can't have my happiness rest on these people being caught, because they might not be," Jennifer said. "I need to just find my own peace."
