Gigi Hadid defends her supermodel title
The 21-year-old addresses the debate that took aim at her supermodel status
There has been a debate about whether young models like Gigi Hadid and her BFF Kendall Jenner deserve the supermodel title or not. Industry veterans like Tyra Banks, Calvin Klein, Rebecca Romijn and Stephanie Seymour have all weighed in on the matter.
It was the latter who called the new generation of models 'b-tches of the moment', sparking a response from Kendall who wrote a comeback on her app. Stephanie has since explained her statement: "There were no names mentioned, and NO ill intent involved. A supermodel is a supermodel. I respect and admire all these women in my industry, in particular Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner."
And now it's Gigi's turn to speak up. She shared her thoughts in a podcast with André Leon Talley.
"We are given the opportunity to spread our wings in so many different industries because people get to know is; they start to understand different levels of our personalities and our talents," she said.
"Obviously, Cindy [Crawford] and Claudia [Schiffer] and Naomi [Campbell] – no one can do it better than them in the time that they were in," Gigi added. "I think that the reason why Kendall and Cara [Delevingne] and Karlie [Kloss] and I are kind of...able to have this moment right now because the industry needed a change to be able to welcome in another generation."
"Everyone is affected by the pressures that come from being on social media, and we're all human," she continued. "I'll never say that it doesn't affect me."
