George Clooney's wedding was romantic, but his proposal wasn't
Even celebrities can't have everything
Once upon a time, there was a man called George Clooney, who was envied by men everywhere. George had good looks, he was a famous actor, and he was pretty much the most eligible bachelor in Hollywood, even though he was already over 50.
But then it took George 25 minutes to propose to his girlfriend, prominent human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, whose first reaction to a ring hidden artfully in a matchbox was "It's a ring."
*Record scratching sound*
George recounted the night to Ellen DeGeneres, telling her that he even went the extra mile, cooking dinner, lighting candles and playing music by his cabaret singer aunt Rosemary Clooney to set the mood. Amal, who clearly thought it was just an ordinary night, missed all the cues until George got her to open the matchbox on the pretence that a candle went out.
It wasn't until after he went down on one knee and said "Look, I hope the answer's yes, but I need an answer 'cause I'm 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon" did Amal respond with the 3-letter word that finally gave the story a happy ending. After 25 minutes of agony on George's part, of course.
And this is him imitating Amal's nonchalant "It's a ring" face. The cutest.
