Emily Blunt reminisces about 'Devil Wears Prada'
The actress dishes on Anne Hathaway's doe eyes, Meryl Streep's razor-sharp portrayal and the line she's forever remembered for
While Emily said it was tough being mean to Anne Hathaway while filming Prada ("With those lovely doe eyes of hers? Very hard!"), some of the best parts of the movie were when she played the bitchy assistant. Lines like "No, shan't" (when Andrea asks her to wish her luck) and "I'm sorry, do you have some prior commitment? Some hideous skirt convention you have to go to?" were deliciously snappy. For another line, which was more of a hand action we'll never forget, she actually pulled it from a real person.
"I like to soak up people on the street," said Emily. "I guess I steal from people I meet. Like, I saw a mother speaking to her child in a supermarket when we were shooting that film. And it's a line that gets quoted back to me now. She yelled at her kid and she kind of opened and closed her hand and she goes [in a harsh American accent], 'Yeah, I'm hearing this, and I want to hear this.' I went and put it in a movie, when Anne Hathaway is kind of talking to me, and I just told her that [to make her shut up]."
When asked about Meryl Streep's razor-sharp portrayal of Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestley, Emily said it was "fascinating" how she created the role. "I remember that first table read and she just submarined — she didn't even raise her voice, it was so frightening. It was just so fascinating, and I think it's actually one of my favorite things she's ever done."
So much so, Emily says if Meryl were on board for a sequel, she would be up for it too. Listen for more of the interview below.
