Elton John To Marry David Furnish In May
The couple decide to wed as same-sex marriage finally becomes a reality in England and Wales
As of 29 March 2014, a number of gay couples have already tied the knot in the UK. Singer Elton John and long-time partner, filmmaker David Furnish will soon join them.
The Marriage Act was extended in July 2013 to recognise the marriage of same sex couples all over England and Wales. Elton and David had entered a British civil partnership in December 2005. Now, they are to take their relationship to the next legal level.
David said in an interview that they will wed in an English registry office in May and that the event will be immensely smaller than the lavish $2 million reception they had for their civil partnership in 2005. Only their kids Elijah and Zachary, plus a few friends will present this time.
"We don't feel the need to take an extra step legally. But since we're committed for life, we feel it's really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example," David said.
Elton had spoken to Jimmy Kimmel late last year about their responsibility as a celebrity couple to set this example.
"It's our duty to do it to make sure everyone knows that this is something that is a gift that we never dreamed we'd ever get," the 67-year-old singer said.
We're very happy for Elton and David, as well as for all gay couples in the UK.
