Doing the Robin Williams tribute was tough for best friend Billy Crystal
Meanwhile, UN elects Leonardo DiCaprio as Messenger of Peace, Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger are divorcing, and Melissa Rivers to join Fashion Police special
Billy Crystal opens up about Robin Williams tribute
It had been two weeks to the day after the passing of beloved actor and comedian, Robin Williams, when his close friend Billy Crystal had to deliver a speech and tribute at the Emmy Awards. Speaking on Today, Billy revealed that although he was more than willing to do it, the assignment was "the hardest thing I've ever had to do."
He added that comedy brought him and the Patch Adams actor together, and that he had been a confidant whenever Robin needed someone to speak to about his troubles and depression. "We weren't just doing comedy, we were just talking as friends. And I think, then as we got older, it got better and deeper and we talked about everything," Billy said. "We'd talk three to four times a day sometimes."
Watch Billy's speech, both funny and heartbreaking, as he paid tribute to Robin at the Emmys in August.
Leonardo DiCaprio is a United Nations Messenger of Peace
Is there anything Leo can't do? Short of flying without wings (for all we know, he'll even surprise us with that someday), he's added another notch to his belt. The Great Gatsby actor is now a Messenger of Peace for the UN, focusing on climate change.
This doesn't come out of the blue as Leonardo has been involved with philanthropic efforts for years, including the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.
"It's an honour to accept the role of UN Messenger of Peace on Climate Change and to support the Secretary General in his efforts to address one of the most important issues we face as a global community," he said in a press release. "I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history - it is a moment for action. How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet."
Leonardo starts his new job at the Climate Summit on 23 September in New York.
Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger call it quits
Word has it that Avril and Chad are about to get a divorce after only being married for a little over a year. A source told Us Weekly that the Nickelback frontman "has been going around L.A. telling people that they are divorcing." The couple started dating in July 2012 and got engaged a month after. They wed in July 2013 and have not since hinted that their marriage was on the rocks.
The Rock n Roll singer had reportedly tweeted a photo of the 17-carat bling Chad got her for their anniversary in July, but the photo is now non-existent. Ah well, that's a hint if anything.
Melissa Rivers is to co-host Fashion Police special
As a tribute to the late actress, Joan Rivers, her daughter Melissa will join Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and George Kotsiopoulos for a 90-minute Fashion Police special. The special episode will celebrate Joan's legacy on the TV series, while looking back at her best moments as co-host. Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan will air on 19 September on E! after an all-day Fashion Police marathon.
